Riverstone Films Charts New Integrated Media Territory Riverstone Films has executed South Africa’s first virtual stadium television commercial, in the process providing unprecedented fan support to the Springbok rugby team as they head to New Zealand to defend their IRB Rugby World Cup title. The commercial was produced for Draft FCB on behalf of Vodacom. The rousing, 45-second commercial shows a Springbok team lined up in a virtual 3-D stadium filled to the brim with ardent fans singing the unofficial Springbok anthem, Shosholoza. The brilliance of the execution lies in the virtual supporters being represented by video clips they submitted as part of the Vodacom Shosholoza Bokke campaign, which enables fans to show their support even though the team is playing more than 11 000km away. The commercial was flighted on 1 September to coincide with the national team’s departure for the three-week tournament and is a mainstay of Vodacom’s campaign for the duration of the showpiece. User-submitted video clips have been incorporated into the virtual stadium, with the original audio from submissions combined to provide the song soundtrack. The commercial was in production for three months, with user submissions downloaded and scanned daily for quality and suitability. The submission of the content was completely reliant on Vodacom’s data network as individual video clips were uploaded via mobile phone, and webcam onto the Vodacom website, or captured at specially-erected booths at rugby and other live events. Riverstone Films’ experience in producing visual campaigns, combined with Holden’s 3-D animation prowess, enabled the team and its varied suppliers to effectively pull off the complex project. One of the biggest challenges was collating the audio from the thousands of user-submitted clips to produce a unified, harmonious rendition of the song. This required ensuring that the tempo, tone, pronunciation and syncing of all the clips produced a credible final audio that is true to what a stadium full of fans would sound like. The visual credibility of the virtual stadium was equally important and was achieved under Holden’s directorship. Jeremy Holden Delivers Honest Emotion. Jeremy Holden and Riverstone Films have completed a campaign for the Democratic Alliance and Volcano Advertising, ahead of the upcoming municipal elections. The commercials document the experiences of real South Africans living in Democratic Alliance run municipalities, and were completed in a manner true to Jeremy’s heartfelt treatment. Jeremy’s treatment focused directly on how people would be identified, selected, and then directed so as to capture the essence of their own personal experiences. He believed strongly that each candidate needed to express their truth through their own voice. Along with his direction of performance, he focussed on a camera language that would reinforce the honesty of the commercials. This camera language would also be used to capture beautiful images of these people and their environments, without changing or undermining their authenticity. To this end, Jeremy explored the 5D and 7D camera systems and lensing to deliver on commercials that are emotive and captivating. Accompanying these treatment elements, Jeremy explored an approach to edit that would tell each story sensitively and comprehensively. Jeremy has succeeded on a series of ‘documentarian-style’ commercials that explore a wonderful honesty, a heartfelt delivery, as well as a rich camera language and beautiful picture depth. This campaign further solidifies Jeremy’s ability to work within a range of different film mediums, from realism, to strong performance, to humour, and through to post-intensive, reality-bending commercials.
